Dream Kitchen

This is it, I am officially updating our kitchen cupboards. I've cleaned them with ammonia (my best tip for removing invisible traces of grease), removed the silly cup handles (silly because who puts cup handles on cupboard doors?? They're meant for drawers!) and right now I'm waiting for the filler to dry in the screw holes left by said handles.

I was trying to explain to my husband yesterday why I want to order brass handles (dark kitchen, brass is a warm colour which catches the light) when I came across photos from an IKEA project in Canada last spring. And lo, a dream kitchen. I'm afraid I am not acquainted Jillian Harris' work, but she has got beautiful taste in kitchens... Using IKEA's standard 'Sektion' kitchen system with 'Bodbyn' fronts in pale grey and antique brass handles, Jillian has created nigh on my dream vision. And it seems to have won my husband over to the brass handles as well. It's nice when we agree :)

I bet you're wondering about those beautiful tiles on the wall... I looked up Jillian's blog, and it looks as if they're called Carrara Bianco Bardiglio Hexagon Honed Marble Mosaic, available from The Builder Depot in the US. Luckily for our finances they don't ship to the UK.

Tricia Guild for Bemz

Bemz, the ingenious provider of 'prêt-à-porter' and bespoke covers for IKEA soft furniture, is celebrating 10 years in business and to mark this milestone they have teamed up with a clutch of exiting designers to create a special 10th anniversary collection.

First out is Tricia Guild, who presents the first curation of the collection - a printed cotton cover in 'Azure Sudara' for IKEA's Söderhamn sofa, awash with luscious hydrangeas which contrast beautifully against the minimalist lines of the sofa itself. Tricia has teamed this with crisp and zesty cushions in Designers Guild's soft and tactile 'Brera Lino' (and might I add that this is quite a bit cheaper than if you were to buy similar cushions at DG itself...)

Spring Blooms

At this time of year shrubs, borders and river walks are playing catch-up with each other and every day is an opportunity to pick flowers and bring them inside. Unlike florist flowers they tend to come in lots of different lengths and quantities, so it's useful to have a good range of vases at the ready. Small, tall, wide, shallow, bud... they will all come in handy.

All of the following are or would be a good investment

'Äng' by KLONG. A cylindrical glass vase in small or large with a two-tier grid insert in gold, black or verdigris blue. Ingenious. I bought mine from Royal Design, though I did recently spot the small gold version at Skandium in Marylebone.

A collection of glass jars and pitchers can make a beautiful still life and is something one can easily pick up in charity shops

Opaque pastel coloured vases like these beautiful 'Dew' vases by Norwegian artist Kristine Five Melvær look wonderful on their own or shown off with a single stem of something simple.

 Photo: H&M
Always affordable and accessible (if it's not sold out!), Hennes & Mauritz - or H&M as it's called here.

Round glass vases abound at the moment and look good with a loose bouquet of flowers. And grouped on the stairs, like here ;)

And last but not least, the Alvar Aalto vase by Iittala. Designed in 1936 and as current as can be. We have two. If you are searching for a wedding present look no further..

IKEA trip!

Yay! Today I am spending the day at IKEA :)

The first thing my husband said this morning was "are you going to IKEA? Please don't buy too many things. We have too much as it is. And please call me before you buy anything large." With a seriously concerned look on his face. He knows me well..

I'm just going for an outing really. Though I am looking forward to seeing the latest product launches up close, having seen the photos on IKEA's fantastic blog Livet Hemma.

On my list of items to locate in the big blue and yellow hall are the new KNAGGLIG storage crates in pine, which can be stained and painted (easily 'vintaged') and used for tidying up garden stuff...

BARSÖ trellis... which might work better than a pin-board (it's hard to find a nice one)

Garden furniture, like this BROMMÖ recliner and TÄRNÖ table and chairs in easy on the eye black acacia wood

Not to mention the NIPPRIG collection (where I have my eye on a certain armchair), how lovely is this little two-seater?

Obviously, the new smartphone chargers. Game-changing, like this RIGGAD lamp.

The SINNERLIG collection by Ilse Crawford - if there is any left...

and food. I'll quite clearly have to recharge my batteries in the cafeteria, but I also want to pick up some bits and bobs from the food shop for our Norway Day garden party next month.

I think I'll be home late...

Powder Pink

I was filing photos on my new PC last night, and looking at the little squares on the screen I realised that all I could really see were colours. All of a sudden the images grouped themselves by colour in a very pleasing way.
Here's a little powder pink to start the day

Summer Novelties

Tine K, the Danish purveyor of pared-down homeware and fashion, has just launched a summer collection called 'Summer Novelties' with beautiful sun-bleached pieces to die for. My favourite picks? These two:

a nifty little 'basket pocket' in plain blond leather which you attach to your beach basket...

...like so. No more scrabbling around for your phone or ice cream money at the bottom of your (sandy) bag.

And this cane sofa, perfect for flopping on after an arduous day on the beach...

Lovely. Takk Tine!

The great thing about Tine K is that you can order from the online shop and have it delivered 'abroad', ie outside Denmark. Unlike many of the Nordic brands which I covet.
There are several retailers here in the UK who sell part of the Tine K range, but I haven't found anywhere in the London area that sells the full range. Online does.

Spring News from IKEA

My favourite Swedish furniture store is releasing a flurry of new designs, ideas and products this spring - so much so that it's almost hard to keep up.

Here are some of the things that have caught my eye recently:

This neat rectangular tray with a playful design by Olle Eksell is part of his ÖNSKEDRÖM collection for IKEA which will launch on April 10th (I love the fact that the tray has a green reverse).

Possibly the most exciting news is the collection of lamps, furniture and decorative items which feature integrated wireless chargers for smartphones. Not only that, they all come with USB ports for charging camera batteries etc. Chargers are some of the most uninspiring objects but here they are turned into practical and discreet features on beautiful, simple pieces for the home. My two favourites are these:
RIGGAD desk lamp

NORDMÄRKE 'charger plate'

Then there is ESBJÖRN, a seductively simple chair with a smart quilted seat cover (non-slip!). Somehow the cover reminds me of something much more expensive... It's the kind of piece I wish we had room & need for, it's so good looking.

And to remind us of birds returning from colder climes, OLUNDA framed art print by London-based illustrator Jenny Capon

Into the Blue

So blue hasn't really featured on my list of favorite colours for a while - I was an ardent fan of blue rustic stripes for a long time and then went off it, like you do when you've had too much chocolate... But blue has come back into my life, in our bedroom and in my wardrobe. Suddenly blue is the most appealing and refreshing colour, as in these images below...

The Ilse Aesthetic

My beloved and I are just back from spending our wedding anniversary in the picturesque very Olde England village of Old Amersham just north-west of London. I think we all tend to rush off quite a distance when we want to get away, and thus we miss little gems closer to home. Amersham is only a 45-minute drive away from our Surrey home, so we arrived at our destination without any of the usual bickering (me accusing Love of driving too fast, him insisting that he can't drive slower than the speed limit. Growing up in a country where 55 mph is considered dangerously fast has made me beyond jittery on the road).

The Crown Inn, Old Amersham
I had booked us in to The Crown Inn hotel, which has rooms designed by the celebrated designer Ilse Crawford. I won't pretend that the attraction wasn't mainly Ilse, but I also found the thought of staying in an old Elizabethan inn fascinating. As a child I used to devour historical romantic fiction set in just such surroundings. The Crown was old yet stylish in a way that appeals to connaisseurs of the sludgier end of Farrow & Ball's colour chart. Charmingly creaky and sloping floors, dark wooden beams, a crackling fire in the reception area. Very atmospheric. But when we arrived at our room my heart sank. The receptionist had handed us the key and announced that it was 'a lovely room!' and I realised that he was trying to put a brave face on it - or perhaps it was an attempt at subliminal manipulation. The room, located at the end of a corridor and then at the bottom of a winding staircase, next to a fire escape, felt like a dungeon. Slightly below ground level, with a low ceiling and a window opening on to an outbuilding, this room was where I had chosen to take my husband as a treat for our special weekend. The muted grey colour scheme and the ascetic shaker furnishings felt less like a treat, more like a monastic retreat. A quick look in the even lower-ceilinged bathroom revealed beautiful fixtures, but a shower in which my husband would have to bend his head. I felt miserable. Somehow we always seem to get the worst room when we go away for our anniversary (we were once stuffed into an ugly little staff room in the attick in a Canterbury inn - my husband had reserved a four-poster deluxe). I just wanted to get out of there and return after dark, but my beloved went to the reception and did what I can't bring myself to do: complain. He is a gent.
We were given another room, and suddenly we saw what Ilse Crawford's design was meant to look and feel like: Muted, rustic, pared down, yet comfortable. The emphasis was on a heavenly bed with big tweed cushions to lean against while reading ('Absent in Spring' by Mary Westmacott in my case), Bestlite wall lamps provided excellent reading light and simple wooden stools functioned as bedside tables. There was a plain wooden rocking chair in a corner with a sheepskin for warmth and softness, and a beautifully simple oak trestle table as a desk-cum-dressing table. There were ample supplies of teas and coffee - including ground coffee and filters for brewing plus loose leaf tea, though I'm afraid the four little milk cartridges didn't go very far. A little dressing area with a line of wooden shaker pegs around the walls led to a smart bathroom with a traditional and excellent shower in which I stayed far too long. It was exactly as I had hoped when I made the booking. My husband, however, was less taken with the Ilse Crawford aesthetic, finding it dull and lacking in warmth. And I agree that he had a point: There was no colour in the room, apart from a tomato-red vintage radio. It was a study in light grey, taupe and black, with oak accents. The theme continued in the public areas downstairs, which were stylish in the same rustic way, but lacked a little warmth and life. It needed an injection of colour and a green plant here and there to balance out the monastic feel.

The Bar. Photo: The Crown Inn

There was nothing monastic about our dinner though, which was excellent. My husband's duck pie was the stuff of dreams and the recipe is apparently the chef's closely guarded secret. We woke up to dazzling sunshine the next day but by the time we had finished breakfast it was raining heavily. Instead of going off for a hike like most of the other guests we took the easy option and visited Hughenden. There, in the walled garden, I spotted another hotel in a similar palette of muted colours... a very spacious 'bug hotel' :)

Åhléns Bra Val - I want to redecorate

Swedish retailer Åhléns has just launched a great new sustainable collection for the home called "Bra Val" - good choices.

Suddenly I want to redecorate.

Photo: Åhléns
The photos are from a small Stockholm flat decorated and kitted out by Åhléns in the Bra Val range. And guess what? This flat is available to rent on airbnb...
