Smaller Objects

The acclaimed Swedish design architect trio Claesson Koivisto Rune has just launched a new brand called 'Smaller Objects'. The collection of these smaller objects for the home and garden is full of beautifully simple designs, very clean and tactile.

I particularly like the 'Marfa Light', which is a torch holder for the garden - a 'fakkelholder' as I would call it in Norwegian. The cup measures 10cm in diameter and is designed to hold a garden light aloft above ground by the door, in a flowerbed or along a path. Our house is a slightly unlovely-looking one from the fifties, with a red brick and pebbledash façade, which requires careful choices when it comes to garden ornaments. Many lanterns and garden light holders are overly romantic or twee, which in our case would make it look as if we are trying to compensate for the look of the house (no, she is not the prettiest in town, she is one of 16 sturdy houses built on our street by the council in the fifties, but we have decided to assume this - style her right and she'll be handsome as you like). Marfa's design will sit very happily between our mid-century façade and the old-fashioned roses we have planted in the front garden.

Marfa light €89. Will become available from shop.smallerobjects.com in February 2015.

The second design from Smaller Objects which will hopefully find its way home to us is a couple of the 'Stockholm' digits in cream semi-gloss ceramic. These digits were originally designed in collaboration with BrittonBritton as room numbers for the very stylish Nobis Hotel in Stockholm. We have a red brick garden wall facing the street and these beauties fixed onto the driveway post should enable anyone to find our house number even in the darkest winter nights.

Stockholm numbers €19 each. Will become available from shop.smallerobjects.com

PS: A quick call to Skandium in Marylebone revealed that they will not be selling the Smaller Objects range. Hvorfor ikke?
